Film Screening in Kyiv-Mohyla Academy

“Like slavery and apartheid, poverty is not natural. It is man-made and it can be overcome and eradicated by the actions of human beings. And overcoming poverty is not a gesture of charity. It is an act of justice. It is the protection of a fundamental human right, the right to dignity and a decent life.”

Nelson Mandela

Cinema Club of Kyiv-Mohyla Academy and Kyiv activists of Amnesty International Ukraine invite you on 25 September at 18:30 to an event as part of presentation of an upcoming campaign “Dignity.” There will be a documentary screening “Human Needs. Human Rights” (AI USA, 2004, English) and an open discussion with Tetyana Mazur, Director Executive of Amnesty International Ukraine.

Amnesty International is preparing to launch a global campaign called “Dignity.” The campaign will concern those violations of human rights that cause poverty, or deepen it. Poverty means not a lack of income but a refusal in access to resources and opportunities, security and strength, which are necessary for people in order to realize their rights and to lead a decent life. Universal right to human dignity in full measure is possible only when a full respect to all human rights be guaranteed, from an adequate housing to access to information. The campaign will focuse on the impact of dignity denial for people living in poverty. In particular, health care and housing, as these are the spheres where human rights violations are the most widespread and threatening. Poor health is both a source and a result of poverty, as well as a widespread result of human righs violations. Amnesty International will pay particular atention to maternal mortality and HIV/AIDS positive.

ADMISSION FREE. 27 Naberezhno-Khreschatytska St., room 13.
